Because Microsoft is stupid and ISPs are even stupider and the Department of Homeland Security has no fucking clue about the Internet, ISPs are universally blocking port 4444 due to the RPC flaw. Because of this, VargonMUD will be moving to port 23. That means you can telnet to VargonMUD without entering a port number at all in a normal telnet client. There is a proxy on port 4444 to allow some time for you to change. In the future, the MUD will completely migrate and 4444 will no longer work for accessing VargonMUD. Thank you stupid hackers and government. :P

Thanks to Zeke, the MUD's memory has been upgraded (it's been doubled) so now we can stay up longer between reboots. Accordingly, the reboot interval has been set to 24 hours. Of course, it was set during my lunchtime... so it currently reboots during my lunchtime... Sometime soon, it will be set to reboot at 2 or 3am-ish.

It looks like sprintlink is having problems again. If you're getting huge amounts of lag or being disconnected, this is likely your problem. It should clear up eventually.

7 / 31 / 1998
I'm not sure what's up with Sprintlink, but they're doing something over there that's causing access problems to the MUD. My advice: Sit it out, or better yet, get out of the house and do something. ;)

In case you didn't notice, the MUD came back up yesterday morning.

7 / 20 / 1998
VargonMUD is currently down. Power outages caused by monsoon storms in Arizona have rendered the machine inoperable. It will return as soon as possible. Watch here for further information.

Look! A new website design! I hope you'll find it more pleasing to the eye than the old look. Also, check out the NEW MudMail Gateway! Read, Send, and Delete MudMail messages without even logging in! (Of course, you'll need to supply your username and password).

MCI currently seems to be having problems routing traffic to the MUD. If you cannot connect, this is probably why. Just wait and try again later.

10 / 01 / 1997
The address mud.vargon.com 4444 should now be updated in all nameservers. Please use that address from now on.

09 / 29 / 1997
VargonMUD has suddenly moved! The name mud.vargon.com should kick in sometime around 10pm Eastern Time tonight. Until then, you can get there by telnetting here

09 / 17 / 1997
VargonMUD has a new address, and so does this website! The website is now www.vargon.com and the MUD's address is mud.vargon.com 4444. Please use these new addresses from now on. If the MUD moves to a different machine, these addresses will point you to the new one automatically.

07 / 08 / 1997 (Look! We're now Year 2K compliant!):
VargonMUD's website has been revamped. You can now look forward to even more bad humor. Don't forget to check out the new Photo Gallery! If you have a picture you would like added, check out the details for how to get your picture to me in the Photo Gallery.

Everything below this line is really old, but it's useful for those of you who would like to (somewhat) trace the history of VargonMUD.

5/21/97:
VargonMUD is BACK
Still at dogsun.dog.jhu.edu 4444.

2/26/97:
New Site
If you are interested in helping with the new site, mail me. Only those who already have the ability to code will be considered.

2/21/97:
Dogsun is experiencing disk problems
The machine on which VargonMUD runs is experiencing severe disk problems and will be offline until further notice.

12/9/96:
VargonMUD has shut down
As you probably know, our site is gone. We've known this was coming for quite a while now, so we're not really surprised by it. We have made provisions for a new site, unfortunately, the MUD on that site is not yet fully operational. Check here for news as it develops. For administrators: You can connect to the new site at this address. Let me know if you have problems.

5/31/96:
There's a new form!
To simplify adding new homepages to the homepage list, there's now a simple form you can fill out to supply the pertinent information. If you would like to add a link to your homepage, or update an existing link, please use that instead of e-mailing me directly.

3/24/96:
Hey! Something's different...
VargonMUD's website has undergone major reconstruction (as you may have noticed). A browser that supports frames (like Netscape 2.0, or the upcoming MS Internet Explorer 3.0) is highly recommended.

3/23/96:
A return to normalcy
Everything on the secondary site seems okay now. Let's cross our fingers.

3/15/96:
VargonMUD II (the secondary site) is currently down.
The machine is currently having problems seeing outside its domain. We hope to have the problem resolved soon, but it may be a while because we're not quite sure what happened yet.

1/22/1996:
VargonMUD is still currently down on its primary site (map.eps.jhu.edu 4444) for the following reasons:

After the two conversions listed above, the MUD will be open to immortals so that they can update their code and start coding anew.

When it is determined that the new VargonMUD is sufficiently stable, it will reopen to players.

Until then, players may continue to play on our temporary alternate site (dogsun.dog.jhu.edu 4444) with the following rules and/or exceptions:

If you have questions, feel free to mail me (vargon@cs.jhu.edu).
